All Pilots,
It is truly with the saddest of hearts that I must inform you of the very recent passing of our fellow Blue Winger LCol JG (John) MacGregor RCA, at his home in Langley BC, Wed 7 Dec 2022. at 1600 BC time. John was 83 years of age and as a direct result of very serious and painful medical issues, he opted for MAID for his last flight to the big hangar in the sky.
Anyone who was ever involved in the world of Canadian Army aviation and later Canadian Forces tactical aviation during the 1960s through to when John retired from the Regular Force in 1978 will know the name MacGregor and hold that name in the highest possible regard, both as a pilot and an Artillery officer who served the Guns so well.
May he rest in peace knowing that he will not soon be forgotten by anyone who ever had the privilege of knowing and serving with this fine officer and gentleman.
More detail on John will be provided soon in the NEW and LAST FLIGHT Sections of our Canadian Army Aviation Website canadianarmyaviation.ca. Anyone wishing to send email condolences to the family can do so by using John's wife Karen's email address flyingm@shaw.ca

Last Flight - Capt CK (Keith) Bisset CIntC: View Content
All Pilots,
Regret to advise that our most senior living (to the best of our knowledge) Canadian Army Aviator took his last flight here in Ottawa at Perley Rideau Veteran’s Health Care Centre 22 Jul 2018, at the age of 93. Capt CK (Keith) Bisset CIntC was the one and only CIntC pilot in the Canadian Army/Canadian Forces. He was a former Glider Pilot and subsequently undertook fixed wing training as a member of LAPC 26, graduating 10 Aug 1959 at CJATC, Rivers Camp MB.
He will be remembered as a brave and free spirit, always up for an adventure and often took-on exciting and potentially dangerous missions during his various roles in the military (quoted from Keith’s obituary in the 28 Jul 18 Ottawa Citizen).
A private service in celebration of his life will be held at Eden Cemetery in Cambray ON (no date).
Further information on and tribute to Keith will be posted to the Last Flight section of the Canadian Army Aviation website canadianarmyaviation.ca in the near future.
Rest in peace Keith up there in the big hangar in the sky with all our fellow aviators who have already preceded you. You have surely earned it.

Many will remember Tom from his days as a pilot with the artillery Air OP and as an instructor at the Army Aviation Tactical Training School, Rivers, MB. Tom as a gunner officer had a distinguished career. He is remembered as a quiet spoken and respected gentleman officer who carried out his duties professionally and efficiently throughout his many years of service to the regimental and as an army staff officer. All Pilots,
Regret to notify all that Maj EHP (Pierre) Garneau RCAC passed-away in YOW 12 Jul 17 at the age of 94. Pierre was a student on No.1 AirOP and Liaison Pilot Course, graduating in Mar 49. This course was run by 444 AirOP Sqn (RCAF) at Rivers. The Sqn was later re-designated as the Light Aircraft School (LAS) 1 Apr 49. Further details on Pierre can be found in a previous post to this website dated 18 Nov 15 in both the "New" and "CJATC/AATTS" sections, entitled "Canadian Army Aviation Memories" authored by LCol John Dicker. Last Flight - Bob Heitshu: View Content
All Pilots,
Sadly I must report that, BGen Bob Heitshu took his last flight at 2300 Friday evening (2 June 17), His wife Wendy and his family were at his side. Tentative plans are for a family funeral before a reception at Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa.
Bob will be remembered not only as a distinguished Gunner officer but also his service as an Air OP pilot with 1 Air OP Flight, Camp Petawawa. Bob also served as the long standing Chairman of the Canadian Air OP Association until it was stood down. Latterly, he was instrumental in establishing the Canadian Army Aviation website and served as the Editorial Committee Chairman. BGen Bob Heitshu was a staunch supporter of all things related to army aviation and was determined that our history would not disappear. We will miss a great comrade along with his guidance and leadership.
Our sincere condolences go out to Wendy and his family.

Army Pilot's Log Books - 150 Anniversary Project: View CASM Archive (This document may take a moment to load.)
The era of Army aviation is of interest to aviation historians. Our era extended over about a thirty-three year period of flying in war and peace. It is a unique part of the Canadian aviation story. The Canada Aviation and Space Museum (CASM) wants to capture our period of aviation history by archiving records of Army flying. To this end CASM has set up a section to archive the log books of Army pilots. The process of archiving our log books is simple, just send or deliver your log book to the address below. If you send it you need to pay for the postage to get the book to CASM. CASM will pay the postage to send your logbook back to you unless you wish them to retain it in their archives. If this is your wish, you will need to send a note with the book. If you haven't already sent in your log book as some have, please consider it a personal 150 anniversary project.
To date we have only 18 pilots who have sent in their log books (11 are gunners).
Log books should be mailed to:

AOP Memorial Wall - The Museum of Army Flying: View Link
This list includes the names of 146 men of the Air Observation Post Squadrons who died in service.
It includes ground personnel and observers who died while engaged with the AOP squadrons.
The Air Observation Post Squadrons were units which were recruited from the Royal Artillery and Royal Canadian Artillery. These gunners were taught to fly in order to spot and direct fire for artillery ground units. Formed in 1941, the AOP squadrons were sent into action all over Europe to fulfil a dangerous but important role. After the war they participated in a variety of situations including the Korean War and Malaya before eventually amalgamating into the modern-day Army Air Corps.
The information is subject to change and this list in considered a working list. If you have any comments, enquiries or suggestions please contact the Archivist at one of the following:

The Memorial Project Eagle Phase 1: View Link
Museum Archive publishes provisional list of names for public review.
Project Eagle is the name given to a 3 phase project that aims to modernise and expand the Museum, thus underpinning its future sustainability. As the initial phase of Project Eagle, the Museum is planning to build a Memorial which is expected to be in the form of a wall. This will commemorate all those who have died in service of British Army flying, from early pioneers who first took to the air in the 1870s to the present day Army Air Corps.
This Memorial will be unique in listing the names of aircrew, support staff, and ground crews of the Royal Flying Corps, Air Observation Post Squadrons, Glider Pilot Regiment and Army Air Corps who have died in the service of British Army flying. It will provide a focus for remembrance for all those who have been involved in British Army aviation. It will be a powerful reminder that behind the historical events are stories of courage and sacrifice involving some 5,200 brave men and women over nearly 140 years.
The Museum is offering the chance to view the lists and make any comments or suggestions.

1000 Hour Mug – Order of the Griffin: View Content
Is there anyone out there who still has a 1000 Hour Mug and/or the certificate that accompanied it?
Please post your response on the Site's Blog.
In December, 1958, I was attending the Long location Course in Shilo, Manitoba. I did my continuation flying at 2AirOP flight,
Shilo. On Saturday, December 30th, 1958, I went flying with Doug McMillan and took the opportunity to fly over the Shilo ranges
to do a bit of crater analysis. On our return to the hangar, and to enter the flight in my logbook,
I realized I had just flown my one thousandth hour.
That is when Doug McMillan said I should be eligible for the Order of the Griffin and the 1000 Hour Mug.
I understand that the Order of the Griffin was originated by LtCol Buzz Borland, who was commanding CJATC.
The certificate that I received has been lost, but I still have the mug.

I understand that the Order of the Griffin was originated by LtCol Buzz Borland, who was commanding CJATC.
The certificate that I received has been lost, but I still have the mug.
